How to Audit Your Canonicals
# Using Screaming Frog
1. Crawl your site (Mode: Spider)
2. Go to "Canonicals" tab
3. Filter by "Canonicalised"
4. Export and review in Excel
5. Flag any canonical pointing to different URL
6. Investigate each one manually
Red flags:
- Canonical points to 404 page
- Canonical points to redirect
- Canonical points to different content entirely
- No canonical on pages with URL parameters
2. JavaScript Rendering Failures
The Mistake
Google crawls pages in two phases: initial HTML, then JavaScript rendering. If your content only shows up after JavaScript executes, you’re playing a risky game.
Real example: A SaaS client rebuilt their site in React. Beautiful interface. Great user experience. Zero organic traffic.
Why? Their entire navigation, content, and internal links only rendered via JavaScript. Google’s initial crawl saw basically an empty page.

How I Fixed It
Step 1: Test what Google actually sees

Target TTFB by hosting type:

6. Mobile-First Indexing Failures
The Mistake
Google now uses the mobile version of your site for ranking. If your mobile site is missing content that’s on desktop, Google doesn’t see it.
Real example: A B2B site had “simplified” their mobile site by removing:
- 60% of body content (to reduce mobile bloat)
- Tabbed content sections (to save space)
- Internal links in sidebar

Real example: An e-commerce site had 47,000 URLs indexed. Only 8,000 were unique products/categories. The other 39,000? Duplicate filter/sort variations.
